IS ACTON A MONTESSORI SCHOOL?

Acton begins at 6 weeks as a Montessori inspired school integrating a focus on hands-on projects and Socratic discussion Method. Acton uses the latest interactive technologies to support independent learning.

Acton harnesses the best of Montessori methods: mixed-age classrooms, student choice within limits, large blocks of work time, learning through “discovery,” and freedom of movement in the classroom. Then we go three important steps further by using the best 21st century e-Learning tools, immersing learners in real-world projects, and adhering to the Socratic method of instruction, which emphasizes asking and answering questions to cultivate critical thinking. Our learners don’t just memorize facts; they learn how to know, learn how to do, and learn how to be!

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY "INDEPENDENT LEARNER"?

An "independent learner" is someone who can research questions, follow instructions, solve problems—admit that they don't know something and figure out a solution when they hit a roadblock without asking an adult for help—participate in discussions, and strive for mastery.

WHAT AGES or GRADES DO WE SERVE?

We currently serve students 6 weeks through 12th grade. We are accredited with quality for Pre-K and K-12 by the GAC.

WILL CHILDREN BE GROUPED INTO GRADES?

Children are grouped into infant, toddler, primary, elementary, middle, and launchpad (high school) studios. We believe that children learn best while working alongside peers both younger and older than themselves rather than separated into age-based groups. In addition to their individualized curricula, every student, regardless of age, works together in groups. Learn more about the Curriculum.

DOES ACTON SERVE SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN?

We are currently not trained to serve children with serious learning disabilities.

HOW DO WE TRACK STUDENT PERFORMANCE?

Students earn badges for mastery of core skills in lieu of traditional grades (A, B,C, D, F). Receiving a badge means mastery in that core skill (equivalent of an A). Badges are not earned until they have reached mastery in that specific area, thus ensuring that students successfully learn and process what they're studying. Badges are translatable as transcripts to other academic institutions.

Students also demonstrate the results of their learning journey through showcases, productions, markets and presentations on their studies.

DO YOU DO ANY CONVENTIONAL TESTING?

Every year, students complete a standardized test (ACT12 or ITBS) to verify that they are performing at or above grade level while retaining the knowledge and experience earned. Even so, we do not take a "teach to the test" approach", opting rather for our individualized approach.

HOW MUCH TIME WILL YOUR CHILD SPEND OUTDOORS?

Lots! Our unique location in the Serenbe community is one of our assets. We are able to facilitate immersive learning on our local organic farm, just a block from our school, and with our deep relationships with arts organizations and community businesses. Heroes also have the freedom to take breaks outside on our campus at their discretion. We also have organized P/E, daily recreation time and a trail running club.

HOW MUCH TIME WILL YOUR CHILD SPEND ON A COMPUTER SCREEN?

Students typically spend between 1-2 hours per day using computers for active learning. Depending on the student and the project being undertaken, it can vary day to day.
